Are you still playing Pokemon GO? If so, do we have some good news for you! Today, Niantic, the developers behind Pokemon GO have announced almost a complete overhaul to the gyms in the game.
You will now find that the gyms play differently and that they aren’t based off training, Pokemon guarding a gym can even become unmotivated after losing battles which will make it easier for the opposing team to take over.
“Gyms are no longer based on Prestige and training. Instead, they now feature six permanent slots that can be filled by the controlling team’s Pokémon. Each Pokémon assigned to these slots must be unique. For example, only one Blissey can be assigned to a Gym at a time. In addition, opposing teams will battle the Pokémon in the order they were assigned to the Gym.”
“At the heart of the update is a new motivation system that will significantly change how you interact with Gyms. When a Pokémon is assigned to a Gym, a motivation meter will be displayed. Pokémon assigned to defend a Gym lose motivation over time and as they are defeated in battle. As a Pokémon loses motivation, its CP will temporarily decrease, making it easier for opposing teams to defeat.”
If your Pokemon loses motivation from battling, you can fully restore it with berries or train it yourself to make it happy again. If a Pokemon’s motivation bar depletes completely, it will return to the trainers party after its next defeat similar to how it currently happens.
Another gym related update is the ability to perform “raids” on another teams gym. Raids is a new co-operative style feature that lets you work together with other players to defeat an extremely powerful “raid boss”.
When you’re ready to team up and defeat the raid boss, all Pokemon on the gym are returned to their trainers and an egg will spawn above the gym with a timer above it, once the countdown runs out, you’ll find out which Pokemon the raid boss is and you can begin your battle. If you defeat the raid boss within 5 minutes then everyone that took part will “have the chance to catch an extra powerful Pokémon of your own”.
However you won’t be able to even battle a raid boss unless you have a raid pass, which you can get 1 a day by visiting a gym or purchasing one from the in-game store.
Before you can battle the Raid Boss, you’ll need a Raid Pass. You can get one free Raid Pass per day by visiting a Gym, but you can only hold one at a time. You can also get Premium Raid Passes from the in-game shop. Upon using your pass to join the battle, you and up to 20 other Trainers work together to defeat the Raid Boss.
You can now gain items from gyms, spinning the photo disk just as you do at Pokéstops, however there will be “some new items obtained only by defeating a Raid Boss: Rare Candies, Golden Razz Berries, and two types of Technical Machines—Fast and Charged.”
The Rare Candies in Pokemon GO behave a bit differently than they do in the other games, in GO, once used, they’ll turn into the type of candy suitable for whichever Pokemon you’re using it on.
